This tour is now closed out.
Come join our trek up Kilimanjaro as we join a retired American Airlines employee who will lead the trip and make his 50th climb of Kilimanjaro. Yes, he has done this climb 50 times so you know you are in good hands on this climb. We are doing the Rongai route up Kilimanjaro.
The Rongai route begins on the northern side of the mountain and is the least travelled route. It is a long drive to the starting point but you are rewarded by fantastic views and the likelihood that you will be the only climbers around. If you take this route up the mountain you are obliged to descend via the Marangu Route that is the most popular and well-used route. Stay in tents.
Here is your itinerary: (note we suggest your arrive on Jun. 23 or 24th to rest up from your flight from North America or Europe but we can reduce the pre hotel stay by one day if you request at a savings of about $45)
- Jun. 23 – Arrive Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and transfer to Moshi Hotel – Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, pick up and transferred to the Springlands Hotel or similar for overnight bed and breakfast. We need your arrival time, airline and flight number to arrange your transfer to the hotel in Moshi two weeks in advance.
- Jun. 24 & 25 – Moshi Hotel – Take time to rest from your flight from North America or Europe and mentally prepare for your trek up Kilimanjaro. If you want we can deduct one night but have found most people prefer the two night since the flights into Kilimanjaro Airport get in very late in the date.
- Jun. 26 – Moshi to Rongai Park Gate and 1st Cave Camp – After breakfast at Springlands Hotel, you will meet your guides and porters and prepare your equipment before departing to Rongai Route. The climb begins from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru on a small path that winds through crop fields before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently, but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, including the beautiful Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains. Overnight 1st Cave Camp. Today you will go from 1,950 m to 2,600 m hiking 8km over 3 to 4 hours.
- Jun. 27 – 1st Cave Camp to 2nd Cave Camp – The morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, we leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. Our campsite is in sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves (3,600m). Dinner and overnight at 2nd Caves Campsite. Today you will go from 2,600 m to 3,450 m hiking 4km over 3 to 4 hours.
- Jun. 28 – 2nd Cave Camp to Mawenzi Turn Camp – A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb all round views and a tangible sense of wilderness. We leave vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Turn Camp, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization. Overnight at Mawenzi Turn Camp. Today you will go from 3,450 m to 4,330 m hiking 7km over 4 to 5 hours.
- Jun. 29 – Mawenzi Turn Camp to Kibo Camp – Cross the lunar desert of the ‘Saddle’ between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Camp, and midnight start the ascent to Summit. Today you will go from 4,330 m to 4,750 m hiking 9km over 4 to 5 hours.
- Jun. 30 – Kibo Camp to Summit to Horombo Hut – Wake at around midnight to a light breakfast, and then prepare for the summit ascent. This part of the hike is carried out during the early morning before dawn so that the climbers reach Uhuru Peak at around sunrise. Leave at about 1:00am and reach Gilman’s Point at about 7:00am. The climbers are met with views of the crater from Gilman’s Point because it is on the Crater Rim. Another 2 hours of hiking brings the climber to Uhuru Peak, the summit. From there you will descend back to Kibo Hut, collect your things and cross the saddle again at Horombo Hut where you will spend the night. Enjoy dinner and get some well-deserved sleep. Today you will go from 4,750 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m, hiking 16km over 5 to 6 hours.
- July 1 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Park Gate 1 to Moshi – Wake as usual, pack and descend to Mandara Hut. Take lunch there and continue on to the park gate where you will be met by your transport back to Moshi. Continue on to the park gate where you will be met by your transport back to Moshi. Overnight in Springlands hotel. Tips is recommended and highly appreciated and can be given to the Guide at Springlands Hotel. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5,685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m) receive gold certificates. Today you will go from 3,720 m to 2,700 m, hiking 18km over 6 to 7 hours.
- July 2 – Depart for home – After an early breakfast, Transfer to Kilimanjaro airport for your departure flight back home. We need to know your return flight number, airline and time to set up your transfers from Kilimanjaro Airport and we need them 2 weeks in advance.
